Kyrie Irving: Out for the Playoffs/Done For The Season

By Elias Connor

The Boston Celtics entered the 2017-2018 NBA season with winning the championship on their mind. However, this mindset quickly changed when one of their stars, Gordon Hayward, went down with a season ending injury during the first 5 minutes of their opener. The mindset of fans quickly changed and nobody thought this team would even make the finals this year.

Although many had changed their mindsets the Celtics never did. After the Hayward injury we saw the leadership from both Kyrie Irving and Al Horford, as well as the emergence of rookie Jayson Tatum and second year Jaylen Brown. The Celtics have played above and beyond how many thought they would after the opener. The Celtics are looking to go into the playoffs as the #2 seed with only 4 games left to go in the season and with that drive to win a championship still on their mind.

With many believing the Celtics can make a deep run in these playoffs, Celtics fans received some difficult news Thursday. The news was that Kyrie Irving is going to be unable to play in the playoffs due to the surgery that was recently done on his knee. This news might just put down the Celtics championship dreams done for good this time.

Losing your 2 best players, Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving, is definitely difficult for any team that is hoping to win a championship. I personally believe that the team the Celtics have now can win a round in these playoffs but will find it very difficult to go any further than that. This is very displeasing to Celtics fans; however, this does not remove the team from being title contenders in years to come.

The Celtics will have 11 of their main 15 players under contract for next year. Some of these players include Gordon Hayward, Kyrie Irving, Al Horford, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Terry Rozier. With players returning of from injury and getting healthy the Boston Celtics should be an even better team next year than they were this year.

Also these playoffs should allow us to see how well Tatum, Brown, and also Rozier play in the playoffs with an increased role. Although it looks like the championship will have to wait until next year, these playoffs will also be beneficial for the Celtics management to see how some of these young guys play when it matters.

Let’s Go Celtics!
